It’s National Baking Week in the UK, a week that encourages people of all abilities to get creative in their home kitchens. To help inspire anyone taking part, the great bakers at Levain & Cherry have generously shared a recipe with us. Follow along, bake yourself a showstopper and make sure to share your bakes with us before it gets eaten 🍪
Levain & Cherry’s Dark Chocolate Cookies
Ingredients:
230g Dark Chocolate
20g Butter
125g Sugar
2g Baking powder
20g Cornflour
150g Whole eggs (approx. 3 eggs)
50g Nuts of choice, chopped.
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 170 degrees/Gas Mark 3.
- Place Butter and Chocolate in a bowl and melt, in a microwave or on the hob, whichever you prefer.
- In a separate bowl, beat the Eggs and Sugar together until combined and smooth.
- Add Cornflour and Baking Powder to the Eggs and Sugar and mix until combined.
- Add the Melted Chocolate and Butter with the rest of your mix and combine.
- Fold in the chopped nuts.
- Place the mix in the fridge to chill.
- Roll into balls weighing 80 grams and place on a grease proof tray – leave room for spread!
- Bake at 170 degrees for 12 minutes.
- Let them cool, then enjoy!

Plant n Plate
Found at 55 High Street, Plant n Plate is an All Vegan cafe, offering fresh baked goods alongside its inclusive menu. Open from 10 am – 6 pm Tuesday to Saturday and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday, why not stop in now and try their Autumn themed Pumpkin Spice Cupcake?
RA Coffee
At 25 High Street, you’ll find RA Coffee, open from 9 am – 5 pm Monday to Saturday and 11 am – 4 pm on Sundays. This friendly spot serves specialty coffees and baked goods from their in-house bakery and the upstairs space is perfect for anyone studying or working remotely.
Early Bird Bakery
Early Bird Bakery serves a range of baked goods, from breakfast staples like croissants and pain au chocolat to cookies, cakes, brioches and buns. With a menu that is constantly offering up new bakes, this stop at 28 High Street is perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Pause
Pause can be found in Kings Court, at the heart of the Heath. The café recently announced it will be open every day, from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm on weekdays and 9:30 am – 4:30 pm on weekends, giving everyone a chance to visit and try one of their famous Cinabuffins.
Levain and Cherry
Also found in Kings Court, Levain and Cherry takes after traditional French boulangeries, offering everything from croissants, focaccia and escargot to cookies, turnovers and cruffins. Open from 10 am – 4 pm, Wednesday to Saturday, stop by to see what baked good Chef Boulanger Pascal has available and try it before it’s gone.
Coffee#1
At 13-15 Alcester Road, this local chain has everything you search for in a coffee shop, plenty of relaxed seating, a range of gourmet global coffees and a display packed with baked goods to add to your order. From classic chocolate chip cookies to cinnamon buns, stop into Coffee#1 to feed your sweet tooth this baking week.
Costa
Who isn’t familiar with Costa? The National chain is an English coffee house staple and a reliable go-to when you need a great cup of coffee and baked goods to go with it. Open early, from 7:30 am – 6:00 pm on weekdays and 8 am – 5 pm on weekends, Costa is the Nation’s Favourite for a reason.
