Saturday 24th September marks the beginning of the Growing Up Green Festival!
This Festival celebrates exploring sustainability and nature on our doorstep in light of Big Green Week! Growing Up Green are hosting a number of activities taking place around Kings Heath between 24th September – 1st October, great for young children to learn about climate change and the importance of living sustainably.
Who is Growing Up Green?
“We are a group of parents in Kings Heath trying to navigate the joys and challenges of raising environmentally responsible kids.”
Growing up Green is a family and children’s art festival that celebrates action on climate change with the aim to educate children and raise awareness around the benefits of living a sustainable, environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Taking place each year across Birmingham and the Black Country, they are so excited to have events taking place throughout Kings Heath to mark Big Green week, running from 24th September – 1st October.

Saturday 24th September
Growing Up Green: Welcome to Kings Heath – 10am – 11.30am
To commence the beginning of the Growing Up Green festival there will be a family litter pick around the beautiful Kings Heath Park.
This will be a perfect opportunity to get the kids involved, outdoors and meet some like-minded people while helping the community, as well as a chance to enquire about events taking place over the next week.

Junk Modelling at Kings Heath Library – 2.15pm – 4.30pm
Head to Kings Heath Library to find out what you can create out of recycled materials. Teaching your children effective and fun ways to recycle different materials, allowing them to bring their imagination to life! For more information click here.
Sunday 25th September
Kings Heath Clothes Collective – 9am – 12pm
Fletchers will be hosting the Kings Heath Clothes Collective located on York Road!
This sustainable event will be a swap shop – starting at 9am this will be a great chance to swap out any of your children’s clothes, aged 0-5 years, that you no longer want or need.
There will also be a section for you to purchase any preloved items too!
Entry is £3 for both swappers and shoppers.

How Brave is the Wren – 11am – 1pm
Head along to this interactive workshop ‘A Rainbow for Amala’
Discover a new storybook with a fun twist – be sure to bring along a smartphone which will magically bring the book to life.
This interactive storybook is about three children from inner city Birmingham who are affected by climate change. This is your chance to help the characters Nafeesa and Karim discover why their friend Alama gets upset when a storm blows in!
This workshop will include interactive puzzles, animated videos, drawing time and a chance to meet and chat with the writer and creators.

Wednesday 28th September
Woodland Play (preschool kids) at Highbury Orchard – 10am – 12pm
This woodland play session is a great excuse to get your little ones outside enjoying the fresh air and nature.

Thursday 29th September
After School Action at All Saints Square – 3pm – 5pm
Head to All Saints Square after school to take part in Art and nature activities and campaigns about ongoing environmental issues.
This is a great chance to educate your children about climate change, you will have a chance to chat with Growing Up Greens Nature mentors – a great opportunity to learn, understand and think about what you can do as Kings Heath residents to help improve the local environment – find out more here.
Saturday 1st October
Toni Tot’s Drama: The Monster Clean-Up at Highbury Orchard – 12pm – 3.30pm
Written and performed by Toni Midlane, this is the story of Bellinda Bins as she whizzes around the magical woods on her turbo-boosted Bin-On-Wheels.
This will be an energetic outdoor theatre adventure! Where they will explore the issues of plastic waste, recycling and the importance of respecting our environment.

Growing Up Green Festival at Highbury Orchard – 12pm – 4.30pm
To round up Big Green Week the Growing Up Green Festival will be taking place at Highbury Orchard!
People of Kings Heath are invited to head down and make ‘potions in the mud kitchen’ and connect with nature through different forms of play activities.

Voting for Capture Kings Heath x Growing Up Green is now open!
As well as events running throughout the week, Growing up Green has partnered with our Capture Kings Heath photo competition this year, where we invited people to take photos of their favourite spots in Kings Heath, with a green twist.
Head over to your Facebook page to LIKE your favourite images, the ones with the most likes will be crowned the winner of the public vote.
All winning images will come together to form an Exhibition around local businesses in Kings Heath!
